MEDFORD, Ore. – The Medford Rogues (34-12) defeated the South Bay Storm (9-30) 5-2 on Saturday evening at Harry & David Field to secure the #2 seed in the Golden State Collegiate Baseball League playoffs.

It was Christmas in July at Harry & David Field. The Rogues wore Santa hats special Christmas themed jerseys, which went up for auction during the game. Proceeds from the jersey auction benefitted Access. Rogues fans brought canned goods with them to the ballpark to donate to Access.

Maxx Mahon (Vanguard University) led off the second inning with a hard-hit groundball single. He then stole second base and took third on the single by Ryan Gamboa (Academy of Art University).

With two outs, Jesse Spangler (Presentation College) singled to left field to score Mahon and then stole second base. Spangler scored on the RBI single by Pete Mendazona (Feather River College), who took second on the throw home. Mendazona then stole third and scored on the RBI single by Turner Olson (Chico State).

Gilbert Romero (Chico State) allowed one run and struck out six in 5.2 innings pitched to pick up his first win of the season.

Brice Foster (Menlo College) came on in relief of Romero in the top of the seventh inning with the tying run at third for the Storm. Foster induced a weak ground ball to third baseman Omar Ortiz (Vanguard University), who fired home in time to retire the runner and preserve the 3-2 lead.

With two on and two out in the bottom of the eighth, Gamboa hit a fly ball to right field, which was dropped by the fielder. It allowed Medford native Travis Danielson (Menlo College) and Foster to score to give the Rogues a couple insurance runs.

Matt Lester (Vanguard University) came on to pitch the final out of the game to pick up eligibility for the Golden State Collegiate Baseball League Playoffs.

Jesse Spangler went 3-4 with an RBI, a stolen base, and a run scored in the win.
